Crime is falling in Barnsley. Help us keep it that way

The Barnsley Safer Communities Partnership is the local partnership set up in response to the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The partnership involves statutory, voluntary, community and business sector agencies working together to reduce crime, fear of crime and victimisation. Barnsley has a strong history of partnership working to address crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour, dating back to 1995 when the first "Crime Prevention Partnership" was established.  Since then legislation has been introduced, most notably the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, to ensure that different agencies are cooperating to address these issues.

The Safer Communities Partnership is one of One Barnsley's (the Local Strategic Partnership) delivery mechanisms.  It also fulfils the role as the accountable body for the Safer and Stronger Communities block of the Local Area Agreement, as well as being the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership for Barnsley.

Our Approach

The Partnership adopts a four strand approach to tackle crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour in Barnsley, as follows:

• Prevention through physical and social measures.
• Enforcement.
• Rehabilitation of offenders.
• Support for victims and witnesses.

These approaches are deployed across the six strategic themes of the partnership:

• Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour and the Fear of Crime
• Reducing Volume Crime
• Tackling Violent Crime and Domestic Abuse
• Reduce Drug Misuse
• Fostering Community Inclusion
• Prevent and reduce offending

The Safer Communities Partnership is supported by a staff team who serve to facilitate working between the various agencies, and provide the lead coordinating function for a wide variety of initiatives. The Staff Team is resourced by BMBC and South Yorkshire Police.
